Dr Ola Niewiadomski MBBS (hons) FRACP PhD

Dr Ola Niewiadomski is a Gastroenterologist who combines private practice with a Senior Medical Specialist appointment at St Vincent's Hospital, Melbourne.

Ola studied Medicine at Monash University, graduating with honours in 2004. After finishing her Gastroenterology training in Melbourne, she completed a fellowship in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) at St Vincent’s Hospital along with postgraduate degree (PhD) through the University of Melbourne. Ola was granted the Australian Postgraduate Award, as well as an international award (European Crohn’s Colitis Young Investigator Award 2015) for her research, and has published in local and international journals. She was a recent recipient of the GESA-Ferring IBD Excellence Grant (2020).

Ola maintains a strong clinical and research interest in Crohn’s and Ulcerative colitis, including the role of dietary therapy. She has been involved as co-investigator in the DELECTABLE clinical trial addressing the role of diet in managing these conditions. She has presented at both local and internal conferences in her area of interest.

Ola believes in a personalized approach to managing Crohn’s and Ulcerative colitis, with a strong focus on advanced and biologic therapies to achieve best patient outcomes. She maintains a wide breadth of knowledge across these therapies with regular attendance at local and international IBD conferences.

Additional areas of interest including parenteral nutrition and gastrointestinal manifestations of amyloid. She is involved in a prospective AuSPEN registry of home parenteral nutrition patients.

Ola is an experienced proceduralist in gastroscopy, colonoscopy and polypectomy, and is accredited with the Gastroenterology Society of Australia (GESA). She is also skilled in capsule endoscopy that is available in the rooms.

Ola holds a Clinical Senior Lecturer position at the University of Melbourne. In her role as Senior Medical Specialist at St Vincent's Hospital she is involved in the Inflammatory Bowel Disease service (clinic and inpatient patient care) and clinical lead in the Parenteral nutrition team (inpatient and home parenteral nutrition), as well as endoscopy (gastroscopy and colonoscopy).

She retains a broad range of interests in all areas of gastroenterology including Inflammatory Bowel Disease, bowel cancer surveillance (NBCSP), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), reflux disease, eosinophilic oesophagitis (EoE), nutrition, hepatology, endoscopy, colonoscopy, removal of polyps and capsule endoscopy.

Ola is passionate about providing a high standard of care and compassion to all her patients, and will endeavor to see all new referrals in a timely manner. She is a mother of 2 and enjoys spending time outdoors with her family, as well as running and skiing.
